How Solskjaer equalled Matt Busby’s youth players record

While Doherty, Lewis, Olive and Scott only made a handful of United appearances, the other quartet formed an integral part of Busby’s back-to-back First Division title winning sides, in 1956 and 1957.

Sir Alex Ferguson promoted six youth players to the first team over the course of a season on four separate occasions (1994/95, 1997/98, 1999/00 and 2011/12), while Louis van Gaal gave the following sextet debuts during his first campaign in charge: Andreas Pereira, Tyler Blackett, Reece James, Jesse Lingard, Paddy McNair and Tom Thorpe.

Solskjaer’s predecessor Jose Mourinho selected half a dozen Reds from the Academy ranks during 2016/17, including current first-teamers Scott McTominay and Axel Tuanzebe.
