TROPHIES AND AWARDS BEFORE THE GAME

Before the clash, several individual and team awards were on show by the Reds. First, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes held the Carabao Cup in front of the Old Trafford crowd, displaying our first major trophy in six years. Following that, Casemiro and Mary Earps both took to the pitch showing off their FIFA’s ‘The Best’ awards before David De Gea stood beside Sir Alex Ferguson as he was awarded his prize for the most clean sheets in the club’s history with 181, overtaking Peter Schmeichel on Sunday against Newcastle United. And after the celebrations were concluded, both sides took to the centre circle to pay tribute to legendary commentator John Motson, who sadly passed away last Thursday at the age of 77.

HAMMERS UP FOR THE FIGHT

Twenty-five minutes into the tie and United had full control of the tie, with 60 percent possession with four shots with two on target. Marcel Sabitzer’s strike just moments into the game was the Reds’ best chance of the half. But despite having major control of the early exchanges, it was the Hammers who had the best opportunity. Michel Antonio’s breakaway forced De Gea to make a wonderful low save, before Said Benrahma’s shot was straight at the Spaniard. West Ham continued to threaten De Gea’s goal into the second half, which resulted in Benrahma curling the opener to give the visitors the lead.
