The midfielder would go on to complete the 90 minutes, and help his nation record a famous win over Spain, who they defeat for the first time in a senior international fixture since 1984.

The victory also maintains a 100 per cent start to the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign for Clarke’s side and, as a result, they currently sit top of Group A with six points.

Speaking in a post-match broadcast interview, he told Viaplay: “We did really, really well.

“We knew they’d have lots of the ball, and the manager said be clinical when we had the opportunities, and I thought we had enough opportunities tonight to really hurt them and score some goals.

“As a kid, I was an attacking midfielder – I like to get in the box. I’ve got to keep doing that, I know I can add more goals and assists to my game.
