UNITED 2 MAN CITY 0, 2020
After an inconsistent January, the arrival of Bruno Fernandes and loan signing Odion Ighalo had started to see the tide turn for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, with a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions going into our meeting with Pep Guardiola’s Citizens. The Reds had reasons to be optimistic, following our 2-1 away victory at the Etihad in December, which came courtesy of a Marcus Rashford penalty and a tidy finish from Anthony Martial.
And the optimism was duly rewarded in the first half, when Martial’s strike from a Fernandes free kick caught City’s Ederson by surprise to break the deadlock. It could have got even better for the Reds before the interval, when Fred was brought down inside the penalty area by Nicolás Otamendi. Even though contact was made on the Brazilian midfielder, VAR decided not to award the spot kick, much to the bemusement of the home fans.
