Lingard has experienced the ups and down that football can throw up in recent times with a difficult night at Young Boys followed by coming off the bench to net a glorious winner, ironically, against last season’s loan side West Ham.
“That’s what I’m saying about football – look how quickly there’s another game and how you can bounce back. Obviously, it was a mistake [against Young Boys], and it’s probably the worst mistake I’ve made in my whole career playing football, to be honest. But things like that happen, it’s a mistake, we’re human, I didn’t see the guy and obviously he’s scored.
“Of course, you’re going to get people chatting rubbish online, but I don’t read into that, I’m too grown up for that now. I got back on the training pitch the next day and back to work and I concentrated on facing West Ham, and that’s how it is. That’s football; you get a chance to redeem yourself and bounce back and I thought I did that in great style.”
