How Marcus Rashford matched Charlton, Beckham and Rooney with England goal

During qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, Rooney put goals past San Marino, Montenegro (home and away) and Poland.

After the tournament in Brazil, he then embarked on a run of seven scoring games (San Marino, Estonia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Slovenia, San Marino, Switzerland), with the final goal in that sequence the penalty which took him beyond Charlton’s long-held record of 49 for England.

“It is definitely a nice feeling,” Rashford said, after being asked for his thoughts on the win over Roberto Martinez’s highly rated side. “It is something we have had to prove to ourselves – that we can actually go on and beat these teams.

”Too many times, we’ve drawn or just fallen short and been beaten against the best teams but we managed to get over that line and it is a massive win for us, it will do a lot for us.
