Ole Gunnar Solskjaer mustered three successive victories, over Reading (again!), Arsenal and Chelsea in the 2018/19 FA Cup, only to be knocked out by Wolves, following a 2-1 defeat at Molineux.

David Moyes began the League Cup well with the Reds, eliminating Liverpool, Norwich City and Stoke City, but his team fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup when on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline to Swansea City in early 2014.

Sir Alex Ferguson got past neighbours City in the FA Cup third round in 1987, with a Norman Whiteside goal, but his team were then knocked out by Coventry City later that January.

Louis van Gaal (Milton Keynes Dons), Ron Atkinson (Tottenham), Dave Sexton (Arsenal) and Tommy Docherty (Wolves) all lost their first domestic cup ties at the helm.
