Met with torrential rain in Istanbul, both sides took their time to get to grips with the soaked surface they were playing on, and it would be the Reds who had the first sight of goal. Bursting down the left, James Scanlon dragged a powerful effort towards the far post but it strung the gloves of Jankat Yilmaz.
The hosts soon found their rhythm and 11 minutes in took the lead. Beknaz Almazbekov’s winding run on the right saw him pull the ball back into Demiroglu whose first-time finish flew beyond Elyh Harrison to give Galatasaray the advantage.
Binnion’s side looked to finish the first half strongly, in search of an equaliser, but despite a handful of openings, the Reds were unable to trouble Yilmaz between the sticks and went in at the break a goal down.
