It was Fitzgerald who assisted United’s second goal, with a ball arrowed forward into the path of James Scanlon on the left wing. His initial, right-footed shot after cutting inside was parried by Stoke ‘keeper Ben Houston but our no.11 immediately despatched the rebound with his other boot.
The Reds’ lead was extended to 3-0 when second-half substitute Gabe Biancheri was fouled inside the penalty area by Stoke centre-back Sanchez Phillips, and the Wales youth international stepped up to take the kick himself and send Houston the wrong way.
Scanlon forced United’s fourth goal in the 75th minute, with a sweeping effort inside the left-hand post after Reece Munro challenged the Stoke defenders for a high ball into the box. It was subsequently chalked up as an own goal by Houston.
The Potters netted a consolation three minutes later as Luke Enright raced on to a lofted pass and prodded low past the onrushing Myles.
