Weghorst converted a spot-kick in the shootout win over Brighton but played down the suggestion any mind games with Solly March had a major impact on the outcome of the semi-final.
“To be honest, I never spoke about it because nobody asked me,” he replied. “But I didn’t kiss the ball!
“I was behind the ball and told him [March]: ‘Don’t shoot left!’ That was actually the only thing I said to him. I just wanted to try to maybe get a little bit in his head and maybe just get him thinking about what he was doing. Afterwards, maybe then it could help but I don’t think it made a difference.”
The centre-forward also told us about his great satisfaction at having pulled on the famous red shirt.
“I’m proud, first of all,” he said. “I’m still really, really proud and thankful to play for this amazing club, a big club, the most beautiful club in England.”
Best of luck to Wout for the future from everyone at United.
