United Women International round up 08 October 2022

United’s no.9, Martha Thomas, featured in Scotland’s make-or-break tie against a tough Austrian side in a bid to book their place in a World Cup play-off final. Thomas was subbed off late into the second 45 of the 1-0 win at Hampden Park, for eventual game winner Abi Harrison, who netted the crucial goal early in extra-time.

Meanwhile Kirsty Hanson, who is currently out on loan, was an unused substitute.

The duo could be involved when the Scots face the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday for a place at the 2023 World Cup.

In keeping with the World Cup theme, our Welsh Reds were tasked with beating Bosnia and Herzegovina to book their place in a play-off final of their own. An extra-time winner was also needed to get the job done for Cymru in the 1-0 victory, as United’s Hayley Ladd featured in backline and helped her nation keep a clean sheet.

Carrie Jones was also named in the XI and replaced with 10 minutes of the 90 to go. Young Reds Safia Middleton-Patel and Chloe Williams did not feature at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Wales will now play away to Switzerland on Tuesday with qualification for next summer’s tournament on the line.
