Scott McTominay says United must play for pride

“It’s about playing for pride and not anything else other than self-pride as we’re playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. For us, we’ve been nowhere near good enough, it’s not the standard and we know that. Everyone has spoken in the dressing room then and we know the standards are nowhere near good enough. We have to look ourselves in the mirror and do better.”

McTominay returned to the starting XI after being an unused substitute at Liverpool, following an injury lay-off. Although the Reds did not get the rub of the green in the capital, particularly with some VAR calls, the homegrown product was not seeking any excuses.

“Of course, it [the result] is harsh but we lost 3-1,” he reasoned. “The most imperative thing in football is goals, that’s the most important thing in the game of football. If you don’t score enough of them, you get punished. It’s difficult for me to speak right now. I’ve got no words to say as I’m absolutely devastated and gutted.

“But we won’t give up. That’s what we’ve said in the dressing room. We’re playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world and everybody has to have the same mentality to play with a bit of pride and guts about our performances.”
