Early team news for Wolves v Man Utd | Premier League | 31 December 2022

A huge boost for Ten Hag in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on 21 December was the return of Raphael Varane to the starting XI.

The Frenchman was the first finalist from the World Cup in Qatar to resume playing for his club and he looked impressive and composed as ever, even though he had an unfamiliar partner at the heart of the defence in the form of left-back Luke Shaw.

Varane lasted for 77 minutes before he was replaced by club captain Harry Maguire, who was named as a substititute as his recovery from illness continued.

The notable omissions from United’s squad against Forest were Scott McTominay and Victor Lindelof, both of whom were ill, and longer-term absentees Jadon Sancho and Axel Tuanzebe.
